If there’s anything that we need at the end of 2020, it’s pure holiday cheer. Thankfully, Netflix is here to deliver in spades with its new Christmas-themed series, Holiday Home Makeover with Mr. Christmas, a show that’s all about decking the halls with garlands, lights, and peppermint-scented cheer.
In each episode, Manhattan-based interior designer Benjamin Bradley — known in the industry as “Mr. Christmas” — transforms homes with the help of his merry team. Whether they’re decking out a firehouse for the community to enjoy or creating a balance between Christmas and Hanukkah for a couple with mixed religious traditions, Mr. Christmas and his team are all about helping families create traditions to carry on year after year.
Unlike most home renovation shows, Mr. Christmas’ clients aren’t usually in need of a major facelift. In fact, most of them seem like they already have nicely curated homes. But this consistency is what makes the show feel a little bit flat.
There are some great moments, especially in episode two, which centers around a family’s fire station that was in need of holiday decorations after their chief passed away. The entire town comes out to see the final product, and you can’t help but be touched by the show’s emotional ending.
However, the rest of the episodes have a tendency to feel like they’re skipping over the heartfelt details. There are also a lot of really sloppy, trite scenes — like when Mr. Christmas and his elves hot glue peppermints to a piece of Styrofoam.
